So here’s a depiction of little Murasaki. In the scene where we meet her, she is sad because her pet sparrows go out of their cage. Her serving lady explains that it is wrong to put a bird in a cage anyway. Totally a symbol for her near future…

Genji emaki, a complete set of four prints, illustrating four chapters of the Genji monogatari - The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu in the early 11th century. Four chapters are illustrated:Akashi, Matsukaze, Hotaru and Wakana, chapters 13, 18, 25 and 34 respectively.

文ちゃん
先達は田端の方へお手紙をありがとう。（中略）
会って、話をする事もないけど、唯まあ会って、一緒にいたいのです。
へんですかね。
どうもへんだけれど、そんな気がするのです。
笑っちゃいけません。
それからまだ妙なのは、文ちゃんの顔を想像する時、いつも想像に浮ぶ顔が一つ決まっている事です。
どんな顔と云って云いようがありませんが、まあ微笑している顔ですね。（略）
僕は時々その顔を想像にうかべます。
そうして文ちゃんの事を苦しい程強く思ひ出します。
そんな時は、苦しくつても幸福です。
ボクはすべて幸福な時に、一番不幸な事を考へます。
そうして万一不幸になった時の心の訓練をやって見ます。
その一つは文ちゃんがボクの所へ来なくなる事ですよ。（中略）
もう遅いから（午前一時）、やめます。
文ちゃんはもう寝ているでしょう。
寝ているのが見えるような気がします。
もしそこにボクがいたら、いい夢を見るおまじないに、そうっとまぶたの上を撫でてあげます。
